Project Description

Hermann Park Conservancy

Hermann Park Conservancy’s summer youth (ages 13-17 yrs.) volunteer service learning program begins in July. The Job Shadow program provides youth/teens with an opportunity to get up to 75 volunteer service hours. All applications received will be accepted as confirmation that the youth/teen will be attending. Please send the application via email to and with a subject line stating Job Shadow. Once the application is received, a waiver will be sent to be completed by the teen’s parent/guardian and brought on Orientation Day, June 29th or bring the waiver on the first day the teen attends. Written (the application) parental/guardian consent is important; we must have on file a day time phone number to contact the parent or guardian to confirm attendance.

Please read all the information attached. This program is a free volunteer service learning opportunity; youth will be volunteering and learning in the outdoors with 30 minute lunch break. Youth not able to arrive for the morning session are asked to not attend after 11am but return the next morning. For teens needing volunteer hours other than as set up in the information, please contact Diane Kerr, Director of Volunteer Programs.

It is important that parents/guardians understand this program takes place outdoors each day. A Hermann Park Conservancy staff will facilitate the teens each day. The teens should meet each Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning at 8:30am at the Japanese Garden side gate near Lot A.

Each morning the group will discuss morning projects, gather any necessary tools and head to the project location. Generally, the volunteer service will take place in the morning followed by a 30 minute lunch break and educational activities in the afternoon. Youth should bring a lunch/snack or money to purchase a meal each day.

Orientation Day is recommended for parents/guardians to attend to gain an understanding of what your teen will be doing and where. Takes place Saturday, June 29th at the Japanese Garden, wear comfortable shoes. Time 9am to 11am.

Adults need to attend Orientation Day, only once to register their teen; this takes place on a Saturday, from 9am to 11am. However, if the parent or guardian cannot attend orientation, please set a date to meet briefly with Diane Kerr, Director of Volunteer Programs, on the first day your youth starts.

  • Teens do not have to attend each date.
  • Tuesday August 6th is a major celebration at the Park, George Hermann’s birthday and each year the Job Shadow program is asked to help out with the fun activities at the train station. Please encourage your teen to help us!
  • Program hours– 8:30am to 1:30pm, Thursday, Friday, Saturday.
  • Drop off and pick up is the Japanese Garden at the service gate/Lot A.
  • Teens will be able to leave any items (as backpacks/lunch bags) in the volunteer storage tool room.
  • The program does not take place inside a building. For shade and shelter, participants will use pavilions in the garden centers or Park area. The Pinewood Café is available for break time, it is air conditioned.
  • Restrooms are located in the garden centers and near the Café.

This program is designed to be flexible with hours. If your teen cannot commit to 35 hours over the course of the summer program session please let me know so we can work out a flexible schedule.
